TWELVE

Pye

Even standing right in front of it, he can’t quite believe it.

The gallery room is massive, four white walls with a small illuminated cloud floating at its center. From a distance, it looks like nothing, but Pye stands close enough to see the twinkling dust that falls and winks under the glow of the fluffy cumulus.

She did it. Avirin actually fucking did it.

“Pye! They’re opening the doors.”

He nods to Thom, tucking his hands into tailored black slacks before he leaves the illusory dust exhibit. Already, people file through the gallery entrance, murmuring at the contraptions and educational experiences spread throughout. Families mill about, children darting between legs as couples murmur together. Colors burst in one corner, and a crowd forms in another before there's a tell-tale gasp as the dust is discovered in the very last room.

It was Avirin’s novel idea for the historical archives to partner with artists and educators to put this together. A way to experience the senses of other creatures, smell and see and hear things that bypass common knowledge. The exhibits give patrons the momentary strength of an orc, the chance to shift like a werewolf, or the ability to breathe underwater like merfolk.

Thom leans closer to Pye. “Have you seen her tonight?”

The woman of the hour is conspicuously absent. Pye shakes his head before Thom catches sight of his husband and makes a beeline toward the entryway.

“Sorry...”

Speak of the demon. Avirin tugs off her coat, brushing a fallen tendril of hair behind her ear. “I had to schedule a last-minute appointment. For — dinner.”

“Already?” Pye’s brow hikes. “You just had one yesterday.”

“I know,” Avirin grimaces. “My eyes started — acting up, and I didn’t want to risk it tonight.”

From what she’s told them, she can go a couple of weeks without feeding, but Avirin doesn’t dwell on it tonight. Pye does their best not to let their eyes dart down the black dress clinging to her curves. It’s a losing battle — but they catch her gaze on the deep V of their gauzy blouse under the cinches of their corset.

“And I like your outfit.” She nods toward the royal blue of their hair.

His jaw drops in mock surprise, lantern sleeves fluttering. “Wow, twice in one week. Don’t burn yourself out this early.”

Avirin waves to Thom and his husband before she and Pye fall into step, wandering through the gallery as scents waft from a nearby exhibit. A set of hands grabs the two of them, squeezing as Cascade’s branches shake with excitement.

“This is awesome,” she squeals, but she has eyes only for Avirin, who blushes under her praise. “There’s already a line for the dust; I have to get in and save Selbie a spot.” She turns to Pye as she pulls away. “And I promise to spend plenty of time in your boring art room, too.”

“You’re too kind,” he simpers before Cascade bounds off, branches peeking over the heads of the crowd.
